Unique Shawl Knitting Patterns – Create a Beautiful Accessory For Yourself Or Gifts

by Linda Spangenburg

Shawl knitting patterns are a gift for knitters who wish to make their own shawl. There are many uses for shawls such as for warmth or to make a fashion statement. They can be found to make shawls of various shapes such as triangular and rectangular.

They can be knitted in any color to match any outfit. A shawl can be worn with a pair of your favorite jeans and your favorite top. Many people like the prayer shawl also known as a healing shawl.

Since there are different shapes and various styles, it is important to select the right one that suits the purpose and matches well with the type of wardrobe you wish to create.

Triangular Shawls

The triangular shape is very popular. The top portion is wrapped over your shoulder and the other corners hang toward the front of your body. Triangular shawls are usually knitted from the bottom up by using increasing stitches every row or every few rows. The knitting procedure ends at the top once the shawl is complete. The stitches at the top row are bound off. A single color shawl looks best with most apparel. It is best to avoid multi-color shawls.

Triangular shawls can also be knitted from top to bottom by decreasing stitches on right side rows to create a triangle shaped garment. A pin may be used to keep the shawl up on the shoulders and prevent it from sliding off. If you wish to wear the garment created from shawl knitting patterns, you can knit is to be a shorter length and wider at the top.

Rectangular Shawls

Rectangular shaped shawls are also known as prayer shawls as well as stoles. These are very easy to make since there is no intricate shaping involved. Various lace patterns can be used to create a beautiful accessory. Lace shawl knitting patterns require two pieces that are joined in the middle. Unlike triangular shawls, rectangular garments created using a pattern do not need to be held up on the shoulders with pins. Since the garment goes over the head like a sweater, it stays in place.

If you are a beginner, then most likely you will need to purchase supplies as well as patterns. Usually, the pattern will specify the knitting needle size, the type of yarn to use, and the amount of yarn required to complete the project.

Before beginning your project, take the time to read and thoroughly understand the pattern. The abbreviation meanings may or may not be specified so it is important you know what they mean. You should also know the techniques used especially when working on a lace shawl.

Following a pattern is not difficult but you should still take care with following it perfectly to create the perfect shawl for your need. When selecting a pattern, make sure you select one that is in line with your knowledge and experience level. A beginner should choose an easier project as compared to an experience knitter. Regardless of your skill level, you will still be able to create the perfect accessory.

  1. I spend most of my time knitting, always looking for new patterns, challenging and most importantly free or very low priced. I try to keep a stash of yarns so that there is always some wool on hand ready to start another project. As I am disabled it is something that passes the time, I am sitting and I feel I am doing something that I can be proud of and my family can see an end product.
